MIKA Reyes is glad to cap her UAAP career with a championship and at the same time pave the way for La Salle's future stars.
Reyes said she still remembers the sweet feeling when she won a championship as a rookie with the Lady Spikers, thanks to the efforts of veterans led by star spiker Aby Marano in 2012.
Now she is glad to do the same for the younger spikers, after La Salle beat Ateneo in four sets in the UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball finals decider.
“Ang sarap din kasi nung first namin. Rookie year namin, ‘yun ang iniwan sa amin ng seniors,” said Reyes. “Nung naging seniors kami, hindi namin hahayaan na hindi rin namin magawa ‘yun sa mga bata.”
As Reyes, Ara Galang and Cyd Demecillo bow out of the UAAP scene, a new batch of Lady Spikers hope to make it back-to-back, although La Salle coach Ramil De Jesus declined to give his take on next year’s team.
“I-enjoy ko muna ‘to. Saka ko na problemahin. Matagal naming hinintay ‘to,” said De Jesus.
Reyes is confident the Lady Spikers will remain title contenders, with Finals MVP Kim Kianna Dy and several others expected to take charge.
“Siyempre, magiging different composition ‘yung team next season. Hindi lang naman siya (Dy) ang maiiwan. I’m sure maraming iba ang mag-step-up,” said Reyes.
