MIKA Reyes was both surprised and overwhelmed upon hearing the news that she was the unanimous choice of the national coaching staff to skipper Philippine team to the Southeast Asian Games and other major tournaments this year.
Reyes, who was in Laguna for a Petron team-building session when national coach Francis Vicente broke the news on Friday, told SPIN.ph she was elated to earn a place in the 18-woman lineup and the captaincy was just a bonus.
"My appointment as team captain came as a surprise, kasi ang iniisip ko lang talaga masaya na ako if makakalaro ako for the country," the 22-year-old former La Salle star said in a text message.

The pride of Pulilan, Bulacan said she was aware of the great expectations that comes with the captaincy but vowed to live up to the trust of her coaches and the prayers from her supporters.
"This responsibility, to be honest, is overwhelming and I'm not sure if I can cope with everyone's expectations," Reyes said. "But I respect and appreciate the trust. I hope you can all pray for me and the team."
Not everyone in the volleyball community agreed with Reyes' appointment as team captain, but she is paying no attention to them, as always.
"Never thought of them," she said.
