MERALCO goes for the early solo lead in the Shakey’s V-League Open Conference as it goes up against debuting Philippine Air Force in the main game of a Tuesday triple bill at The Arena.
The Power Spikers are expected to ride the momentum of their thrilling, five-set win over Philippine National Police going to their 6 p.m. encounter with the Air Force in their bid for a second straight victory.
Meralco outlasted PNP, 25-17, 17-25, 21-25, 25-15, 15-9, during the league opener on Sunday for a share of the early lead with Smart-Maynilad.
“At least may baon na kami (na panalo),” said Meralco coach Oliver Almadro. “Ang Air Force kasi medyo mabigat na kalaban yan. Try namin ang best namin na pantayan sila. 'Yun muna ang main goal namin ang makasabay sa kanila.”
Team captain Maureen Penetrante-Ouano, along with veterans Maica Morada, Ivy Remulla, and Stephanie Mercado are again expected to step up for Meralco.
Philippine Army also plays for the first time when it takes on Far Eastern University in the curtain raiser of the triple bill at 2 p.m.
The veteran-laden Army side, which recently won the inaugural championship of Philippine Super Liga, will be up against a Lady Tamaraws’ side that bowed to an eight-man Smart-Maynilad team during the opener, 16-25, 5-25, 19-25.
Tina Salak, Michelle Carolino, Mary Jean Balse, Nene Bautista, Rachel Anne Daquis, and skipper Joanne Bunag take charge for Army, while young guns Jovelyn Gonzaga and Angela Nunag will provide the added boost for the 2011 champions.
Two more teams in Cagayan Valley and Philippine Navy make their debuts as they clash in the 4 p.m. match.
Aiza Maizo, Angge Tabaquero, Sandra delos Santos and Bhebs Pineda will banner the Lady Rising Suns' bid, while the Lady Sailors are leaning on the duo of Mic-Mic Laborte and Kite Rosale.
