Boom Pacres! Rookie quick to make her mark for UST Tigresses in UAAP volleyball

    Dec 27, 2014
UST's youth brigade has made heads turn this season.

UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas’ Mary Pacres is pleased to be given a chance to shine right in her first year with the Tigresses in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.

The Tigresses’ first-year players are quick to get some attention and gain the confidence of coach Odjie Mamon, who has called out the more experienced players for their indifference in the midst of the squad’s struggles.

“Ang saya kasi binigyan ako ng opportunity ni coach na ipakita ’yung laro ko,” said the 16-year old lefty opposite spiker.

“Masaya po kasi may tiwala si coach sa amin kahit rookies pa lang kami gusto niya na i-push namin ang best namin,” she added.

Preseason focus had been on former UST juniors star EJ Laure, but fellow rookies Cherry Rondina and Pacres managed to take a share of the limelight, although the Tigresses are stuck at the bottom half of the standings just a notch above the cellar.

Pacres, who hails from Mandaue City in Cebu, is also thrilled just to hear her name from the playing arena’s public address system, even if it was a nickname derived from a novelty song by a popular television host.

Arena announcer Rolly Manlapaz, the same person who started calling Calvin Abueva ‘The Beast ’ when the Alaska star was still with San Sebastian in the NCAA, would shout “Boom Pacres!” to introduce the young woman before UST games.

“‘Yung commentator tinawag akong ganoon noong opening ng UAAP,” said Pacres. “Ang saya ko po kasi first time ko po (maglaro sa UAAP) hindi ko po in-expect na mapapasok ako tapos ganoon pa po may tinawag na sa akin.”

UST will get back in action against National University on January 7 at the MOA Arena.
