PLDT Home Ultera won the inaugural Spikers' Turf tournament, completing a sweep of the finals against Cagayan Valley with a 25-15, 25-11, 23-25, 30-28 win on Tuesday at The Arena in San Juan.
The Ultra Fast Spikers swept the best-of-three title series, ending the tournament with six straight wins including a sweep of the semifinals.
"Preparation namin nagbuga," said PLDT coach Odjie Mamon.
PLDT rose from a 17-21 hole in the fourth set and came up with a 5-0 spurt to snatch the lead, 22-21, and ended on top after a see-saw battle.
Mamon said he had no problem making the star-studded Ultra Fast Hitters led by Mark Alfafara and Jayson Torres work as a team.
"Walang question regarding ego," said Mamon. "They know their roles umpisa pa lang sinabi ko sa kanila 'yun. They would be given playing time as long as they earn it."
Although the Ultra Fast Spikers dominated the match in spikes (53-43), blocks (19-10) and services (8-2), Mamon noted they were sloppy and had 24 unforced errors, although that is just one more than Cagayan’s total miscues.
"Kaya lang very consistent kami na bumuhay ng kalaban we make them look good," said Mamon.
Conference MVP Marck Espejo scored 14 points, while Jan Paglinawan and Rex Intal chipped in 10 markers apiece for Cagayan.
The PLDT men's team duplicated the feat done by its women's counterpart after the Ultra Fast Hitters won the Shakey's V-League Season 12 Open Conference on Sunday.
