MARCK Espejo unloaded a league record 55 points as Ateneo defeated Far Eastern University, 18-25, 25-13, 24-26, 25-23, 15-9, in the UAAP Season 80 volleyball tournament on Saturday at the MOA Arena.
Four-time MVP Espejo scored 11 points in the fifth set as the Blue Eagles dragged the twice-to-beat Tamaraws to a do-or-die match on Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.
Espejo and his fellow graduating players Ish Polvorosa and Karl Baysa have one more chance to end their collegiate career as champions.
“Inisip ko po kasi hindi ‘yun ‘yung last game na may training pa kami bukas so ayun po,” said Espejo, who had 47 kills, six blocks and two service aces.
“At saka gusto ko lang po maging memorable ‘yung last year ko at saka ino-offer ko sa mga teammates ko ‘yun na pag umalis kami itutuloy nila ang tradition namin,” he added.
With the score at 11-9 in the fifth set, Espejo scored four straight points to hand Ateneo the win.
Espejo’s attack points were more than the entire production of FEU (46) the two-hour and 21-minute match.
Polvorosa registered all but one of the Ateneo’s 46 excellent sets, while Manuel Sumanguid III had 21 digs and 16 excellent receptions.
Ateneo gave away 34 extra points to FEU through errors.
Jude Garcia and John Paul Bugaoan had 15 points apiece for FEU, while Redijohn Paler added 12.
