Marck Espejo scores 30 as Ateneo downs UP for fifth straight win in UAAP volleyball

ATENEO rolled to its fifth straight victory, beating University of the Philippines, 25-21, 23-25, 27-25, 25-21, on Sunday in the UAAP men's volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Marck Espejo came up with 30 points, including four aces for the Blue Eagles, who faltered in the second frame before soaring for a 5-1 win-loss record.

The four-time MVP also had five blocks, 11 excellent receptions and seven digs.

Ateneo’s only loss was to league leader Far Eastern University (5-0) in the opener.

Gian Glorioso had 13 points, while Chumason Njigha chipped in 12 to help Ateneo deal the Fighting Maroons their fourth straight loss in five matches.

John Millete paced UP with 18 markers.

Meanwhile, National University recovered from a poor start to defeat University of Sto. Tomas, 18-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-18.

After dropping the opening frame, the Bulldogs zoomed to an 18-8 lead in the second and cruised to their fourth win in five games.

Fauzi Ismail led NU with 17 points on 14 attacks and three service aces.

UST dropped to a 3-2 card.
