ATENEO got back on the winning track in the in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament, downing Far Eastern University, 25-19, 24-26, 19-25, 25-16, 15-11, in an error-strewn tug-of-war on Sunday at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Eagles notched their second win in three outings, bouncing back from a huge loss to the league-leading National University Lady Bulldogs.
Jhoana Maraguinot scored 18 points, Michele Morente had 17 markers, 14 digs and 12 excellent receptions, Bea de Leon chipped in 11 points and Maddie Madayag scored 10 for Ateneo.
The Lady Eagles were without head coach Tai Bundit, who returned to Thailand to pay his last respects to his mother-in-law.
“Sabi ni coach Tai sa fifth set labanan ng basic ’yan, buti nakuha nila ’yung mga service receive kasi nagsisimula sa basic, then (everything else) sila na ‘yun,” said Ateneo assistant coach Sherwin Meneses.
Meneses did well to steer the Lady Eagles back on track, taking fourth spot behind the unbeaten National University (3-0), University of the Philippines (2-0) and titleholder La Salle (2-0).
Bernadeth Pons scored 18 points, Toni Rose Basas added 15 and Jerrili Malabanan scored 13 for the Lady Tamaws, who suffered their second loss in three matches.
