THE Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. (LVPI) will hold an open tryout beginning on Thursday at the Arellano University School of Law gym in Taft Avenue, Manilain a bid to expand the women’s national team pool.
LVPI president Peter Cayco asked for support from owners and officials of both the Premier Volleyball League and the Philippine Superliga and asked the UAAP and NCAA to allow their players to join the three-day tryouts.
“With three international tournaments coming up, it’s going to be a very busy and challenging season,” said Cayco, adding the tryouts are aimed at beefing up the current national pool with new faces.
The LVPI is looking to send teams to the AVC Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship in China from April 20 to 28, the 3rd Asian Women’s Under-23 Volleyball Championship in Vietnam from July 13 to 21, and the 20th Asian Senior Women’s Championship in South Korea from August 31 to September 8.
Capping the national team's hectic year is a stint in the Southeast Asian Games which the country will be hosting.
“Any support from our countrymen would be greatly appreciated,” Cayco added. “This 2019 [a] strong national team will hopefully put us back on the competitive international map.”
Rebisco president and national team backer Jonathan C. Ng is optimistic the tryouts will have a good turnout.
“For sure, the players will give it their best when they play,” he said. “But they will surely draw strength and do better if we all rally behind and cheer our national team on.”
