FAR Eastern University seeks to secure its second straight Final Four appearance when it battles also-ran Adamson on Wednesday in the UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena.
Bernadeth Pons, Toni Rose Basas, Remy Palma, setter Gyzelle Sy and rookie libero Ria Duremdes have all stepped up in a three-game win streak that put the Lady Tamaraws in third place on an 8-5 card - behind co-leaders Ateneo and La Salle (9-2) and a full game ahead of University of the Philippines and National University. (7-6).
FEU is already assured of at least a playoff for a Final Four spot and appears to be peaking at the right time, according to coach Shaq Delos Santos.
“Honestly speaking, meron pang ilalabas ang mga bata. Kailangan lang kaming maging consistent kami mula sa simula hanggang dulo,” said Delos Santos, who is seeking to steer FEU to a record 30th league title.
“Masaya kami sa mga bata, ipinapakita nila na pinipinilit nilang kayanin lahat. Sobrang proud kami sa kanila,” he added.
Defending champion Ateneo, bracing for its much-anticipated rematch with De La Salle this weekend, clashes with winless University of the East in the curtain raiser at 2 p.m.
The Lady Tamaraws are coming off a big 17-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-14 victory over the Lady Maroons last Sunday but can't afford to take it easy against Adamson, which beat them, 25-21, 25-17, 19-25, 23-25, 10-15, in their first-round encounter.
Tie with the Lady Spikers for the league’s best record at 10-2, the Lady Eagles have already clinched the twice-to-beat bonus in the Final Four, but reigning two-time MVP Alyssa Valdez is treating their match-up against the 0-12 Lady Warriors like any other game.
“Every game is important. Kahit anong game pa iyan, kahit anong team pa yan, kailangan talaga naming ibigay ang 100 percent namin. Matututo at matututo kami in every game. Manalo man o matalo, may errors man o wala,” said Valdez.
