FAR Eastern University dodged an endgame collapse as it held on for a 25-21, 25-22, 29-31, 19-25, 15-10 win over Adamson in the 76th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan on Wednesday.
Rookie Bernadette Pons finished with 27 points, from 21 spikes, three blocks, and three service aces for the Lady Tams, Mary Palma added 16, Marie Simborio chipped in 14 quiet points, while Geneveve Casugod contributed 13.
“Lumabas ang pagkabata ng team,” admitted FEU coach Shaq delos Santos, whose squad is mainly composed of rookie players.
“Nag-relax kami sa third and fourth set, tense sila gumalaw, natatakot magka-mali kaya lalo sila nagkakamali,” he added. “Good thing naka-deliver sila sa fifth set.”
The towering duo of Palma and Casugod defended the net well against the hard-hitting Lady Falcons in the deciding set to give the Lady Tams a 14-11 lead.
An Amanda Villanueva error finally ended the match in FEU’s favor.
The Lady Tams wasted a two-set lead against the Lady Tamaraws as Villanueva imposed her might in the third set to keep FEU alive, 31-29.
The Lady Tamaraws improved to 4-3 overall to grab the solo fourth spot, while Adamson dropped to fifth place with a 3-4 slate.
Shiela Pineda came away with 29 points for Adamson, while Villanueva added 16.
