DEFENDING champion La Salle banked on Abi Maraño's game-long brilliance to fashion out another straight sets triumph, 25-9, 25-19, 25-13, this time at Adamson’s expense as it moved closer in securing a semifinals berth in Season 76 of the UAAP women's volleyball tournament Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Maraño, playing in her final season for the Lady Spikers, had four blocks for a 12-hit showing and recorded eight digs.
“Lumalabas kung ano ang inilalabas sa practice. Nakaka-execute ng tama ang mga bata," said La Salle mentor Ramil de Jesus, who is a victory shy in achieving his 200th UAAP career win.
La Salle extended its perfect run to nine games and 25 overall dating back from last season.
Sheila Pineda had nine points and nine digs for the Lady Falcons, who went down to fifth place with a 4-5 card.
Earlier, Far Eastern University turned back University of the East, 20-25, 25-5, 25-18, 25-20, to gain a one-game lead over Adamson in the race for the No. 4 spot.
The Lady Warriors, who were held to five points in the second set, fell to 0-9 overall.
Prior to the game, a moment of silence was offered for former National University representative to the UAAP board Bobby Paguia who passed away last Friday due to cardiac arrest.
In men's play, defending champion NU outlasted University of the Philippines, 25-16, 24-26, 23-25, 25-18, 15-10, to regain its winning ways and improve to 8-1, while Adamson made short work of UE, 27-25, 25-22, 25-17.
