EMILIO Aguinaldo College opened the 89th Season of the NCAA women's volleyball tournament on high note as it defeated Jose Rizal University, 25-12, 25-19, 25-15, on Tuesday at The Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Generals were superb from the service line, coming up with 15 aces, and took only 56 minutes to take the match.

Charmille Belleza scored 14 and Maricar Agueres added 11 for EAC.

Maria Margarita Tabunda led the Lady Bombers with 12 markers from nine spikes, two blocks and one of the two team service aces.

Meanwhile, in men's play, three-time defending champion University of Perpetual Help clobbered Mapua Institute of Technology, 25-18, 25-13, 25-17.

Reigning MVP Edmar Sanchez came up with 12 points, while Jay Dela Cruz added 10 for the Altas.

Although UPH and MIT both committed 29 errors, the Las Piñas-based spikers had more blocks (5-2) and scored more from the service line (8-2).

None of the Cardinals finished in double figures as Philip Bagalay ended up with nine markers.

EAC’s male players made it a twinkill over JRU with a 25-16, 23-25, 25-13, 25-19 win.

Howard Mojica finished with 16 points for the Generals, while Sid Gerella and Kerth Melliza had 15 and 12, respectively.

Peter Enanod scored 10 for JRU.
