DENIED the last time, Ateneo tries to clinch Sunday the fourth and last semis berth in the Shakey’s V-League Open Conference as it collides with defending champion Philippine Army at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
The Lady Eagles’ initial attempt at a Final Four spot was foiled by Philippine Navy last Tuesday, sending the First Conference champion reeling to a 3-5 record.
Alyssa Valdez, Fille Cainglet, Dzi Gervacio, and team captain Gretchen Ho are again expected to provide firepower for the Katipunan-based squad in their 4 p.m. showdown with the second-running Troopers (6-2).
The Lady Sailors’ win over the Lady Eagles also kept them in the hunt for the remaining semis berth and gave them a big boost going to their 2 p.m. encounter against winless Far Easter University.
Navy is just within striking distance of Ateneo at 2-6.
In the main game at 6 p.m. league-leader Sandugo-San Sebastian tries to tighten its grip of the top spot as it clashes with Cagayan Valley-Perpetual Help.
The Lady Stags are alone on top with a 7-1 (win-loss) card, but a win by Cagayan – tied with Philippine Army at second – can forge a two-way tie for the no. 1 spot.
League format has the no. 1 team going up against the no. 4 in the semis, while the no. 2 and 3 teams will clash for the other finals slot in a best of-of-three playoffs.
The winners will duel for the crown in another best-of-three action.
