ATENEO University guns for at least a playoff for the semifinals as it collides with Far Eastern University in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday at The Arena in San Juan.

Game time is at 4:00 p.m.

The Lady Eagles have won seven straight after a 1-1 start and are currently on top with an 8-1 win-loss card. One more win will put them closer to the Final Four.

Despite the impressive run, Ateneo assistant coach Sherwin Meneses assured that the Lady Eagles still have some surprises up their sleeves.

“Hindi naman (nagpi-peak too soon) kasi tingin ko naman may ilalabas pa ang team eh so hindi pa ito ‘yung talagang laro. Kasi si coach Tai [Bundit] everyday kailangan ma-improve ka sa training,” he said.

Ateneo also hopes to duplicate its win over FEU in the first round, which Bundit missed after going home to Thailand to pay respects to his late mother-in-law.

“Nandyan na si Coach Tai last time kasi five sets eh medyo kabado,” said Meneses.

Hard-hitting pair Jhoana Maraguinot and Michelle Morente will again take the lead for the Lady Eagles, while middle blockers Maddie Madayag and Bea de Leon will provide the defense at the net for the Katipunan-based squad.

Meanwhile, FEU hopes to start a new winning run and halt Ateneo’s flight.

The Lady Tams will bank on the troika of Bernadeth Pons, Toni Rose Basas and Remy Palma.

FEU is on a four-way tie at third place with University of the Philippines, University of Santo Tomas and National University all owning 5-4 records.

Meanwhile, UST hopes to get back on its feet when it faces listless Adamson University.

UST saw its four-game win streak snapped at the hands of Ateneo, 10-25, 24-26, 26-28, on Wednesday.

UST coach Kungfu Reyes needs his veterans EJ Laure, Ria Meneses and Chloe Cortez and second unit Pam Lastimosa, Christine Francisco and Mary Dominique Pacres to step up to help Tigresses captain Sisi Rondina.

In their previous outing, only Rondina finished in double figures of 14 points for UST, while Laure had nine, Meneses came up with eight and Cortez chipped in five.

UST should also limit their errors, which caused the Tigresses the game against the Lady Eagles.
