ATENEO went through the eye of the needle before hacking out a hard-earned five-set win over Adamson in the 76ht UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan on Saturday.
Alyssa Valdez poured in 26 points, from 19 spikes, four blocks, and three service aces, while Ella de Jesus and A Ahomiro added 13 and 11, respectively in the Lady Eagles’ 25-22, 25-19, 16-25, 18-25, 15-13 victory over the Lady Falcons.
The triumph heralded the comeback of Thai head coach Anusorn Bundit over at the Ateneo bench after being away for more than a month following his return to Thailand to train the women’s national training pool.
“Today everybody is happy, we want to win for the Final Four,” said Bundit, who arrived on Thursday night and immediately presided over the team's practice Friday morning.
Down by three, 10-13, in the deciding set, Ateneo held on and scored the last five points, anchored on three consecutive errors of Adamson from Bhebs Pineda and Mayeth Zapanta to end the match.
Despite giving away 40 points to Adamson behind its errors, the Katipunan-based spikers improved their record to 7-4.
Pineda had 25 markers for the Lady Falcons, while Zapanta and Mylene Paat chipped in 16 and 11, each although Adamson dropped to fifth spot with a 5-6 slate.
