ARELLANO University started the semifinal round with a win, surviving a brief scare from San Sebastian College, 25-9, 25-17,15-25, 25-21, on Monday in the 89th NCAA women's volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Menchie Tubiera led the way for the Lady Chiefs with 17 points, while Cristine Rosario had 13.
Danna Henson scored 12, and Shirley Salamagos chipped in with 10 points as AU started the single round semifinals with a big win.
But Arellano coach Roberto Javier pointed out that the Lady Chiefs again let their guard down after a hot start, and the Lady Stags managed to steal the third set.
“Gaya nga ng sabi ko last time, ’yung mga bata pag nakapanalo ng dalawang set masaya na,” said Javier. “Di pa namin ma overcome ’yung ganoong situation so dapat talaga mas maraal namin yung attitude na
gustung-gutsong manalo.”
Gretchel Soltones came up with 20 points, all from hits, for San Sebastian.
But the hard-hitting sophomore from Cebu proved no match against the collective effort of Arellano.
“Talagang si Soltones ’yung pinaghandaan namin kasi alam naman namin na pag magaling sa Baste si Soltonbes talaga ang nakapangalan,” said Javier.
SSC is now 0-1 but will have a chance to even its semifinal record when it faces College of St. Benilde on Friday.
