THREE-time defending La Salle clobbered University of Santo Tomas, 25-8, 27-25, 25-13, in the 76th UAAP women's volleyball at The Arena in San Juan on Sunday.
Team captain Aby Maraño came up with 14 points, including four service aces, while Cyd Demecillo added 12 and Ara galang had 10 as La Salle joined National University in the early lead with a 2-0 win-loss record.
The Lady Spikers took full control early as they shocked the Tigresses with a 12-0 run for a 15-2 lead in the opening set.
UST looked to tie the match in the second as it challenged La Salle, 21-20, but the Taft-based squad scored four straight points, including two service aces from Kim Fajardo, a former UST girls volleyball team member, to make it 24-21.
Carmela Tunay and rookie Ria Meneses worked hand in hand as the Tigresses clawed back and positioned themselves at set point, 25-24.
But UST handed La Salle a free point after a Jem Gutierrez service error and the Lady Spikers took the set.
The Lady Spikers did not give the Tigresses any chance in the final set, scoring 10 consecutive points for a 22-6 lead.
The black and gold spikers answered with a 6-1 spurt but La Salle quickly stopped the run.
Tunay registered 10 markers for UST, which dropped to 1-1.
