LA Salle recaptured its glory days in the UAAP, beating Ateneo, 19-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-16, on Saturday to cop the Season 78 women’s volleyball title before a record crowd at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Ara Galang and Mika Reyes capped their collegiate career on a high note as the Lady Spikers regained supremacy in the UAAP by snapping the Lady Eagles’ run of two straight titles.
A crowd of 22,848, most of them lining up at the break of dawn, witnessed the Lady Spikers returning to glory after losing in two previous finals match-ups against the Lady Eagles.
It was a sorry end to the career of Alyssa Valdez, the three-time Most Valuable Player who put the Ateneo women’s volleyball program on her shoulders, winning the previous two UAAP crowns.
La Salle won its ninth title in the UAAP.
Tears fell as graduating players Galang, Reyes, and Cyd Demecillo finally ended two years of disappointment.
Kim Dy was adjudged finals Most Valuable Player after scoring 17 points in the rubber match.
Valdez finished her UAAP career by scoring 31 points but couldn’t lead the Lady Eagles to another UAAP crown. Moments after losing the crown, Valdez was consoled by La Salle’s Kim Fajardo, her former teammate during their days at University of Santo Tomas high school.
Valdez also circled around the court to say good bye to the UAAP fans as she was hugged by La Salle head coach Ramil de Jesus.
