TREBLE-SEEKING La Salle swept National University, 27-25, 25-22, 25-11, to book a 10th straight appearance in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament finals on Sunday at the MOA Arena.
Except for a close first set, the top-seeded Lady Spikers had things under control against an uninspired NU side as they arranged a best-of-three title face-off against second seed Far Eastern University.
Game One is on Saturday at the Araneta Coliseum.
“Wala namang bago kasi kung ano man 'yung narating ng team ngayon, siguro dahil na rin sa mga players kasi gusto nila 'yun,” said La Salle coach Ramil de Jesus, who coached the team in that entire run of 10 finals appearances.
“Gusto nila 'yun, kaya siguro, na-develop na rin 'yung character. At 'yung maturity, dumating sa mga players. Although may mga times na may struggle 'yung team, pero eventually na-overcome nila 'yun,” he added.
Tin Tiamzon had 11 markers for La Salle while graduating middle blocker Majoy Baron had nine and libero Dawn Macandili, who’s also on her last playing year, had 23 digs and 10 excellent receptions.
The loss marked a disappointing end to the college career of longstar NU star and national team mainstay Jaja Santiago as she bid the UAAP goodbye without a title and not even a single Finals stint.
Santiago, who was reduced to tears after the game, finished with 17 points for NU.
