DEFENDING champion La Salle fought back from two sets down to defeat Ateneo and snap the Lady Eagles’ six-game win streak on Saturday in the 75th UAAP women’s volleyball at the Arena in San Juan.
Ella de Jesus’ back-to-back attacks sliced the Lady Eagles’ deficit, 13-14, but Michelle Gumabao saved the day for the Taft-based spikers and came up with huge plays to help La Salle hold on for a 26-28, 21-25, 25-13, 25-21, 15-13 victory.
The Lady Spikers came up with a 10-2 run to close the third set, then from a 21-tie in the fourth made the final four points to extend the match into a deciding set. It was Ateneo’s first loss of the season.
“Advantage namin yun (championship experience),” said La Salle coach Ramil de Jesus. “At least may nasasandalan, may pinaghuhugutan.”
Victorana Galang came away with 18 points, Mika Aereen Reyes contributed 16, while Gumabao and Abigail Maraño added 12 and 10 markers, respectively, for La Salle.
La Salle and Ateneo now both have 6-1 win-loss records.
Alyssa Valdez finished with 23 points on 16 attacks, three block points and four service aces. Fille Cainglet, who twisted her right ankle late in the fourth set, had 16 for Ateneo.
Although La Salle gave out 41 points to Ateneo due to errors, the Lady Spikers came up with 13 block points compared to the Lady Eagles’ seven.
National University defeated University of the Philippines, 25-16, 25-14, 25-18, in the other match.
Dindin Santiago led the Lady Bulldogs with 17 points, while Maricar Nepomuceno and Myla Pablo chipped in 13 and 11, respectively. NU now holds a 4-3 win-loss record in fourth spot.
Nicole Tiamzon and Princess Mae Se had five markers apiece for UP (1-6).
