LA Salle coach Ramil de Jesus gave sophomore setter Michelle Cobb a passing grade on her first game as the team’s playmaker in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament.
Cobb delivered 37 of the team’s 44 excellent sets in the Lady Spikers’ 25-20, 17-25, 25-22, 15-25, 15-8, win over University of Santo Tomas on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The recruit out of St. Scholastica’s College had her time to shine after former three-time league best setter Kim Fajardo graduated from the team.
“Sa ngayon passing grade pero kasi nga marami akong nakikita na, hindi ko naman hinahabol na gawin niya ang ginagawa ni Kim Fajardo,” said de Jesus.
“Ang sa akin kasi, kung ano siya, kung ano ang style niya ‘yun ang i-improve niya,” he added.
The veteran coach, though, admitted that he’s still sees a lot of room for improvement in Cobb's game.
“(Sabi ko sa kanya) ‘wag ‘yung more on ano lang siya maitaas ang bola, mas maganda siguro ‘yung nadidiskartehan niya ng husto ang set niya,” he said. “At the same time nahahanapan niya kung paano magkakaroon ng open block or single block ang spikers."
Kasi every game ine-expect ko kay Cobb na mas matuto or mas maging matured sa game,” he added.
Meanwhile, Cobb, on her part, embraced the lessons she got from their hard-earned win.
“It’s a long season and yung first game na ‘yun sabi nila okay lang na win na ‘yun five sets kasi marami kaming natutunan,” she said.
