MICHELLE Cobb was tasked to be the team setter for La Salle but she delivered more than what was expected of her.
The sophomore playmaker scored the most important points of the game as La Salle defeated University of the Philippines, 25-21, 25-22, 26-24, in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday at The Arena in San Juan.
“‘Yun yung gusto ko ma-establish sa sarili ko na I have my own style, I have my own skills on the way I play,” said Cobb.
The Lady Spikers were pushed to the limits as the Lady Maroons looked to extend the match, 24-21, in the third set before the Taft-based squad scored the game’s last five points, capped by Cobb’s three straight service aces.
“Hindi ako makahinga pero, grabe, inisip ko lang talaga kasi parang yung mukha ni coach Ramil (de Jesus) sa labas na ipasok mo lang, tiwala lang sa sarili,” said Cobb.
“As in sabi nya sa akin na puso at isipan ‘yung kailangang mag-dominate, kailangan palagi. ‘Yun lang palagi ‘yung iniisip ko, na composed ako, one point at a time, and then go from there,” she added.
Cobb had a total of 10 points, including seven of the team’s 16 service aces, and 32 of the team’s 40 excellent sets in the match that took an hour and 36 minutes to finish.
The playmaker, who will turn 19 on Friday, stressed that her performance was her way of repaying her team’s trust in her.
“Pinanghahawakan ko na they trust me and na ayoko ‘yun sayangin,” she said. “Syempre as a setter ikaw ‘yung aasahan ng team kasi ikaw ‘yung magdi-distribute (ng bola), so the trust they give me, I don’t want to waste it.”
