ONE more win to four-peat.
La Salle is halfway done from repeating its success two years ago after a 25-14, 25-20, 19-25, 26-24 over Ateneo in the Game Two of the 76th UAAP women's volleyball tournament finals at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Saturday.
Ara Galang carried the Lady Spikers with 17 points, while Mika Reyes and skipper Aby Marano added 14 and 11, respectively in front of a crowd of 17,105, the biggest in the season so far.
Eight-time champion coach Ramil de Jesus was relieved to see the Lady Spikers regain their winning form and bounce back from the shocking loss in the opener of the series.
“Eto na ’yung totoong La Salle, kung hindi nga kami nag-relax kaya namin tapusin ng straight sets,” said De Jesus. “Andoon na kasi ’yung nagrelax (sa third set), kumapit ’yung kalaban, nabuhay ang crowd.”
Already at match point, 24-21, the Lady Spikers' celebration was postponed as Cyd Demecillo left room for an Ateneo fightback after a service error.
The Lady Eages got a big lift form Best Server Alyssa Valdez as she tied the game 24-all.
But Ateneo handed La Salle the last two points from its errors as Valdez failed to send the ball across from the service line and rookie Kassandra Gequillana had her own miscue on the next play.
The Taft-based squad, whose 30-game winning run was halted on Wednesday, will look to seal the series in Game Three to put an exclamation on the season next Wednesday.
"Kailangan makabalik na ang momentum sa amin," said de Jesus. "Hindi pwedeng bumalik ang momentum sa kalaban, hindi madali ang pinagdaanan ng Ateneo."
MVP Valdez came up with 15 points for the Lady Eagles, while Ella de Jesus and A Ahomiro chipped in with nine apiece.
