FOR the third straight year, La Salle lifted the UAAP women’s volleyball title after sweeping Far Eastern University, 26-24, 25-20, 26-24, in Game Two on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The indomitable Lady Spikers didn't even drop a single set in the best-of-three finals as they wrapped up an 11th title in 18 finals appearances, all under master tactician Ramil de Jesus.

The Lady Spikers had to storm back from early deficits in sets one and three, but were certainly a level above the Lady Tamaraws.

Coming off a tight three-set loss in Game One, the girls from Morayta started the game on fire before the mighty champions stole the set behind the exploits of Kim Dy and substitute May Luna.

They then had to fend off a late uprising from the Lady Tamaraws which saved three championship points to force deuce much to the delight of the 14,018 people in attendance.

But La Salle had other plans as Dy and Tiamzon fired missiles in the next two plays to finish off the Lady Tamaraws.

“Akala nga namin okay na eh. Up kami by four points pero sabi ko 'wag muna mag-celebrate kasi di pa tapos ang laban. Ang FEU di talaga mag-gi-give up and yun nga di talaga nag-give up,” said La Salle coach Ramil de Jesus.

“Pag dumadating yung ganitong situation, hindi na namin binibitawan talaga. Ngayon, nakuha namin ang Game One, sinabi namin sa kanila na wag na natin paabutin ng Game 3,” he added.

The graduating DLSU trio of Dy, Majoy Baron and Dawn Macandili all put up an epic finish to their collegiate careers. Dy finished with 19 points on 16 attacks, two blocks and a service ace, as Baron finished with 10 points.

Macandili was once again reliable on the defensive end as she finished with 21 digs and eight excellent receptions, and was named the Finals MVP.

“Sobrang speechless ako. Di ko inexpect na ako yung magiging Finals MVP kasi non-scoring ako. Di ko inexpect talaga,” said Macandili.

“Yung moment na nakadikit ang FEU sa amin, sabi ko sa teammates ko, kaunting tiyaga lang to. Makukuha na natin yung pinaghirapan namin, tyinaga lang talaga namin. Nanghina ako. Pag tingin ko sa score, sabi ko okay, tapos na. Nagpay-off na ang pinaghirapan namin,” she added.

Bernadeth Pons bid farewell to Far Eastern University with 17 points on 16 attacks but got little help from her teammates.
