THREE-peat seeking La Salle turned back Far Eastern University, 25-22, 25-17, 24-26, 23-25, 15-7, to remain unbeaten in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.

Kim Dy scored 18 for the Lady Spikers, who gained a share of the lead with National University at 3-0.

Skipper Majoy Baron added 16, Aduke Ogunsanya had 11 and Des Cheng chipped in 10 while playmaker Michelle Cobb dished out 49 excellent sets and libero Dawn Macandili had 34 digs and 13 excellent receptions in a match that lasted two hours and 21 minutes.

“‘Yun naman ang lagi kong sinasabi ko sa mga bata, na hindi porke't nakakuha tayo ng two sets, ‘yung third set, ‘yun ang sakit natin eh,” said La Salle coach Ramil de Jesus.

“Sabi ko nga ‘yung 24 points napakadaling kunin, pero ‘yung one point napakahirap. Lagi kong sinasabi sa kanila 'yun,” he added.

La Salle looked set to finish the match, 24-22, in the third set but Dy’s attack went out, FEU scored on back-to-back blocks on Dy and Ogunsanya, then Bernadeth Pons scored on a combination play to extend the contest.

In the fifth set, La Salle cruised to a 7-1 run to take the lead, 12-6, and held on.

De Jesus admitted that frustration started to kick in but the 10-time UAAP champion coach refused to show his emotions.

“Well, andoon eh, pero 'di mo na kailangan ipakita sa mga players kasi alam mo naman na medyo nada-down sila kapag ganun,” he said.

“So i-encourage mo na lang pagdating ng third and fourth (sets),” he added. “Pagka, let's say, kapag very emotional minsan nadadala sa loob ng court lalo na kung nafu-frustrate, lalo na kung errors. Makikita mo na hindi nage-enjoy sa loob ng court.”

Pons had 21 points and 22 digs for FEU, which committed 46 errors and slid to 1-2 for a share of fourth with University of Sto. Tomas, Ateneo and University of the Philippines.
