AFTER his ‘pambarangay’ comment, La Salle coach Ramil de Jesus seemed pleased this time around as the Lady Spikers got back on the winning track at the expense of Ateneo in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday at the MOA Arena.
The Lady Spikers, who came from a disappointing loss to Adamson, pulled off a four-set win over the Lady Eagles, 25-20, 25-17, 24-26, 25-20, and earned the approval of the 10-time UAAP champion coach.
La Salle improved to 5-2, tied with Far Eastern University at the No.2 spot.
“Sa ngayon, 'yung determinationa manalo, pang-UAAP na,” said de Jesus, who explained why he gave such remarks.
“Hindi kasi ako mahilig pumuri ng player eh. Palagi 'yung mistakes ang pinapansin ko sa kanila, 'yung magaganda, hindi ko sinasabi,” he added.
But de Jesus, the perfectionist that he is, still saw some room for improvement for La Salle.
The Lady Spikers erased a 10-point deficit, 11-21, in the third set to tie the game, 21-21, but the Lady Eagles escaped and extended the match.
“‘Yung laro kasi, parang roller-coaster, andoon na tapos biglang bibitaw, pag malayo hahabol. May kulang, ‘yung pang-endgame ang kulang,” said de Jesus.
Still, he gave credit to his wards’ efforts and instead took the blame for the late adjustment when he fielded Carmel Saga to replace his main setter Michelle Cobb late in the third set.
“Nakita ko 'yung determination nilang makahabol,” he said. “‘Yun nga lang medyo kinapos pa rin sa dulo kahit andoon nung last na.”
“Siguro, mistake ko 'yun dahil andoon na 'yung momentum, nagpalit ako ng setter, so hindi nakapag-deliver 'yung setter, well ganoon talaga eh. Wala na sa two points eh,” he added.
Prior to their win over Ateneo, La Salle lost two of its last three games - five sets against National University and four sets to Adamson University.
After their sorry loss to NU, de Jesus immediately held a practice after the game, while the ‘pambarangay’ comment was because of the Adamson loss.
But during their game against Ateneo, De Jesus noted that he finally saw what he wanted.
“Well ito ‘yung gusto kong makita sa kanila,” he said. “Kasi palagi kong sinasabi sa kanila 'yun na hindi ko nararamdaman 'yung character ng bawat isa inside the court.”
“Siguro (dati), nararamdaman ko individual, hindi as a group, as a team. Ngayon, as a team talaga,” he added.
