Kungfu Reyes will be crossing over to the NCAA as the new head coach of the San Beda Lady Red Spikers for Season 101.
After a decade in charge of University of Santo Tomas in the UAAP, Reyes has been appointed by a cellar-dwelling San Beda side looking to rise through the ranks as a Final Four contender.
The Lady Red Spikers are one of three teams to have never won the NCAA women’s volleyball title since the tournament’s inaugural staging 50 years ago along with Mapua and Jose Rizal University.
Reyes’ final act at the helm of UST was a bronze-medal finish in UAAP Season 87 after reaching the finals the year before.
He would then be re-assigned as the school’s program director and head coach of the girls’ volleyball team.
Taking over the Golden Tigresses is his former deputy and returning head coach Shaq delos Santos for Season 88 next year.
San Beda’s coaching conundrum has lasted for five seasons now, with Reyes set to become its fifth head coach in as many seasons.
Among his predecessors were Nemesio Gavino, Ariel dela Cruz, Edgar Barroga and, most recently, Joshua Noda at an interim capacity.
The Mendiola side finished eighth in the NCAA’s centennial season with a 4-14 win-loss record — just one win better than their three-win output in Season 99.
