COLLEGE of St. Benilde bucked a lethargic start, taking down Jose Rizal University, 20-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-22, to secure at least a playoff for a Final Four spot in the NCAA Season 94 women’s volleyball tournament on Tuesday at the Arena in San Juan City.
Klarisa Abriam had 17 points on 16 kills and a service ace and had 22 digs as the Lady Blazers defeated the Lady Bombers in one hour and 40 minutes.
Jan Arianne Daguil chipped in 13 spikes and an ace for 14 hits, Rachel Austero scored 12 and Kaila Miranda had 10 markers.
Setter Jewel Lai scattered 31 excellent sets as the Lady Blazers won their sixth straight game and tightened their hold of the solo third spot with a 6-1 win-loss record.
St. Benilde tries to secure a semifinal berth on Friday when it takes on San Sebastian College.
The Lady Blazers survived 37 errors, fighting back from a 19-21 deficit in the fourth set with Daguil scoring three in a 5-1 run before Marites Pablo provided the match-clinching spike.
Dolly Grace Verzosa scored 12 and Rizza Rose had 10 points for the Lady Bombers, on the brink of elimination with a 4-4 card.
JRU faces University of Perpetual Help (4-2) on Thursday next week. JRU’s fate is not in its hands anymore as it needs joint fourth placers San Sebastian and Perpetual Help to lose all their remaining games.
In men’s action, the Blazers also secured at least a playoff for a Final Four spot with a 25-14, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19 victory over the Heavy Bombers.
Ruvince Abrot poured 14 points, Ronniey Adviento scored 12, Francis Basilan added 11, while Owen Bacani and Joshua De Sequera added 10 each as CSB improved to a 6-1 record, joining idle Arellano University in second place behind unbeaten champion Perpetual (6-0).
June Laxina scored 17 and Matthew Miguel had 12 points for JRU, who dropped to 2-6.
In juniors play, La Salle Greenhills (3-4) defeated JRU (3-5), 25-27, 25-19, 25-22, 25-22.
