TITLEHOLDER La Salle kept in step with the early leaders, overcoming University of Sto. Tomas, 25-23, 16-25, 25-14, 25-22, on Saturday in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Spikers joined National University and University of the Philippines on top with two wins in two matches.
UST, touted as a pre-tournament favorite, is winless in two matches, joining University of the East and Adamson University at the bottom.
Kim Dy recovered from a sluggish start, finishing with 16 points after scoring only four in the first two sets.
Ernestine Tiamzon scored 14 and Majoy Baron added 10.
Baron shone in the third set, rejecting EJ Laure’s attack to put La Salle ahead.
The Lady Spikers took a 14-2 lead in the fourth, only to allow the Tigresses back in the match.
Down 9-18, UST managed to claw back and make it 14-18 but Laure’s service error ended the run.
Kim Dy’s combination attack pushed La Salle at match point, 24-21. Laure managed to save the match point but Desiree Cheng’s kill sealed the victory.
Laure finished with 13 points, same as the output of UST team captain Sisi Rondina, while Ria Meneses and Mary Pacres added 10 markers each.
