FOURTH-year spiker Kim Dy is taking a more active role as leader and not just scorer as a rebuilding La Salle gears up for its UAAP women’s volleyball title defense.

The Lady Spikers will be going for a 10th championship overall without Ara Galang, Mika Reyes and Cyd Demecillo and reserves Mika Esperanza and Carol Cerveza, all key players in the title run last season.

Teams only have two months to prepare before the tournament opens, and it is still uncertain whether Kim Fajardo will return for her fifth year with La Salle, while backup utility spiker Eli Soyud has been out of the team since August.

Dy has taken that as a cue to step up for the Lady Spikers.

“Sinasabi ni coach Ramil de Jesus na ’yung mga natira sila ‘yung mag-step up kasi kami ’yung mga mas may experience doon,” said Dy, who emerged from her shell during last year's finals against Ateneo.

“So for me gusto ko rin tulungan ang teammates ko na bago na kakapasok lang as first six siguro ’yun bigyan ko sila ng instructions, anything that can motivate them,” she added.

The 21-year old spiker also noted that the team needs to work on its cohesivenss especially since almost half of the team has graduated.

Majoy Baron, libero Dawn Macandili, Ernestine Tiamzon, and May Luna are back from last year’s squad, while Desiree Cheng, who skipped last season because of a knee injury, is set to return.

“Rebuilding kami kasi marami rin ang nawala,” said Dy. “Kailangan talaga mas mag-jell kasi ’yun na eh sila na ang nandoon. Hindi na namin pwedeng hanapin ang mga wala.

“’Di namin masyadong iniisip ’yun na pressure ’yun sa amin,” she added. “Parang challenge na lang siguro na may ide-defend kaming crown and we’ll just give whatever ‘yung larong kaya namin.”
