BIÑAN, Laguna — Kazakhstan overpowered the Philippines, 25-23, 25-20, 25-19, on Friday to top Pool A in the 19th AVC Asian Senior Women's Volleyball Championship at Alonte Sports Arena.

Katerina Tatko scored 20 points to the Kazakhs, who finished the pool stage with a 2-0 win-loss record and will face Vietnam in the quarterfinals classification round on Sunday.

Alyssa Valdez tallied 14 points for the Philippines, while Jaja Santiago had 13 markers.

The Filipinas, who beat Hong Kong in straight sets on opening day, now focus on their match against unbeaten Korea in the quarterfinals classification round.

“I can say na I'm still proud of them doon ko nakita yung may puso ’yung laro nila. Syempre may mga lapses di natin maiiwasan,” said Philippines coach Francis Vicente.

The Pinays got ahead by a few points in the early goings but the Kazakhs easily took control.

The last time the two teams faced off two years ago in the Asian meet, the Kazakhs also won in straight sets.

The Philippines actually scored more on attacks, 37-36, and was just one ace short (6-7) but Kazakhstan scored on a total of 17 total rejections compared to the Philippines’ three in a match that took an hour and 27 minutes to finish.
