    Ateneo Lady Eagles rout UE Lady Red Warriors to gain share of lead

    ATENEO de Manila sent University of the East crashing back to earth with a 25-15, 25-21, 25-16 win on Sunday, earning a share of the lead in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

    Kat Tolentino scored 13 points on eight kills, three blocks and a pair of service aces as the Lady Eagles posted their third straight victory.

    Maddie Madayag had eight spikes and three blocks for 11 points for Ateneo, which joins University of the Philippines and defending champion La Salle on top at 3-1.

    Graduating middle blocker Bea De Leon played her most efficient game of the season so far, nailing eight attacks in 12 attempts as the Lady Eagles stopped the Lady Red Warriors in an hour and 21 minutes.

    Jules Samonte also had eight markers and made 12 excellent receptions and six digs.

    “They accepted my challenge, that we have to win convincingly today. They really worked hard. Wala kaming game sa buong week. Theyw worked hard and sacrificed a lot,” said Lady Eagles coach Oliver Almadro.

    “We will not stop here, we will use this as a stepping stone for us to have a brighter future and for us to have a good outcome in the next game.”

    Ateneo will have one week to prepare for the match against UP on Sunday at the Arena in San Juan.

    UE gave Ateneo a slight scare in the second set, moving within two, 22-20, but the Lady Eagles went on a 3-1 run capped by Tolentino’s cross court spike for a two-set lead.

    “They challenged us in the second set. I told my players to accept the challenge,” Almadro said.

    Judith Abil had 14 points and made 18 excellent receptions for UE, which committed 24 errors.

    The Lady Red Warriors, who beat Adamson last Wednesday, dropped to 1-3 record.

    UE next takes on FEU (2-2).
