JOVELYN Gonzaga sparked a pair of come-from-behind five-set wins for both Cignal and Pacifictown-Army in a span of less than 24 hours.
She is dedicating it to her two coaches in different leagues, KungFu Reyes of Army and Edgar Barroga of Cignal, who have been considerate on her situation as a dual-league player.
“Lagi ko ngang sinasabi gusto kong mag give back sa coaches na nagiintindi sa akin,” said Gonzaga, who has been showing her lethal form for both teams since returning from a two-year lay-off from an ACL injury.
Last Tuesday night in Muntinlupa City, Gonzaga with her bestfriend Rachel Anne Daquis powered the HD Spikers to erase Petron’s twice-to-beat advantage in five sets to force a rubber match in the Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference semifinals.
“Malaki 'yung pagkukulang ko sa (Cignal) team since I have another commitment. Ang lagi kong sinasabi kay coach (Barroga), 'Coach, magpa-payback ako, magpa-payback ako,’” said Gonzaga on her Cignal coach. “Thank you sa tiwala kahit minsan hindi ko nabibigay 'yung hundred percent ko, which is naiintindihan ng coaching staff.”
On Wednesday at the Arena in San Juan City, the opposite hitter dubbed as ‘Bionic Ilongga’ refused to surrender from fatigue, even when Pacifictown-Army went down to two sets, leading the fight back to earn a 39-41, 19-25, 25-19, 25-20, 15-12 victory over Choco Mucho in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Open Conference.
“Siya (kungfu)grabe yung pagintindi niya sa akin, hindi niya ako binubugbog sa training. Ito naman yung way ko paano ako makabalik ng tiwala,” said the former national team player on Reyes.
After flaunting a 15-point and 23-dig effort in the PSL semifinals, Gonzaga had 24 points, 26 digs and 16 excellent receptions for Army’s second win in the PVL.
The 27-year-old spiker couldn’t hide the exhaustion but she felt recharged with the back-to-back comeback wins she earned.
“Pagod na pagod, pero wala high morale ako kasi puro panalo yun na lang ang attitude, wala akong iniisip na ibang bagay,” said the pride of Guimaras “Masarap sa pakiramdam. Worth it!”
The Central Philippine University standout’s grueling week is not yet done as she and the HD Spikers take on Petron for the last All-Filipino Finals berth on Thursday at the Arena in San Juan City.
“Eyes on the prize, we need to win. Period. We need to enter the Finals, 'yun nalang. 'Yun nalang talaga ang mindset namin,” Gonzaga said. “No pressure, just enjoy the game. We will just give our best.”
