EMILIO Aguinaldo College survived six deuces, outlasting third seed Arellano University, 24-26, 8-25, 25-20, 25-18, 21-19, to advance to the next phase of NCAA volleyball stepladder semifinals on Tuesday at the Arena in San Juan.
Arellano committed two errors to give the Generals a 20-19 lead before Joshua Mina sealed the big win with a strong hit to upset last year’s silver medalists.
Joshua Ramilo led the charge with 23 points off 21 kills and a pair of blocks, while Mina delivered 20 hits built on 13 spikes, four blocks and three service aces while adding 21 excellent receptions and 13 digs. Aeron Daduya and Ralph Joshua Pitogo added 10 markers each.
“Napressure sila sa fifth set kitang kita sa mga players pagdating sa pressure. Buti nung huli gumana yung Mina kaya nasecure namin yung panalo,” said EAC head coach Rod Palmero.
“Masayang masaya kasi sa daming nawalang players di ko ineexpect na aabot kami dito.”
The Generals, with 12 rookies in a 14-man team, will try to continue the amazing run as they face second seed College of Saint Benilde on Tuesday next week.
“Pipilitin pa rin namin kasi yun naman yung usapan namin makapagbigay ng magandang laban,” Palmero added.
Kim Vincent Tan had 17 points including 15 receptions and 14 digs for Arellano. Christian Segovia scored 15, Christian Dela Paz added 14 and Jesrael Liberato added 12 for the Chiefs.
In juniors play, Letran eliminated EAC, 29-27, 25-16, 19-25, 25-21, with John Paulo Lorenzo scoring 17 and Christian Dela Cruz adding 16 points.
