NATIONAL University spiker Jorelle Singh believes the Lady Bulldogs can win it all in the UAAP Season 78 women's volleyball tournament and end the school's more than 60-year title drought in the collegiate league.
Despite starting the season with a straight set loss to back-to-back champs Ateneo, Singh remains a tough believer they can bring home the crown to NU, which last won a championship in 1956 and 1957.
For her, the key is to trust the confidence instilled in them by multi-titled coach Roger Gorayeb.
The Lady Bulldogs displayed such resolve when they bounced back with convincing wins over Adamson and La Salle, with the victory over the Lady Spikers serving as a morale-booster to the team as it restored confidence in the sophomore hitter.
Singh, though, admitted that doubts crept in when the Lady Spikers showed their resilience late in the match which the Lady Bulldogs eventually won, 25-16, 26-24, 14-25, 25-23, on Wednesday at the MOA Arena.
But what made them composed in those testy times were the words of their mentor to always believe in themselves.
“Masayang masaya sobra kasi hindi naman sa hindi namin ine-expect pero pinaghirapan kasi namin to ng sobra,” she said.
“Siguro noong umpisa nagda-doubt pa kami pero noong nakita namin na kaya pala namin, doon kaya pala namin,” she added.
The Lady Bulldogs came back from a 14-20 deficit in the fourth set before they mounted a 9-1 run to snatch the lead, 23-21, en route to stunning the eight-time champion Lady Spikers.
“Laban lang po, laban talaga,” said the stocky spiker.
NU is looking to build a winning streak when they face University of the East on Valentine's Day, at the Filoil Flying V Arena.
