THE men’s national pool has yet to be trimmed but John Vic de Guzman is assured of a spot after being named captain of the team that will see action in international tournaments this year.
The pool also has Ranran Abdilla, Howard Mojica, Lorenzo Capate Jr., Bonjomar Castel, Rey and Relan Taneo, Mark Alfafara, Reyson Fuentes, Eddiemar and Esmail Kasim, Jeff Malabanan, Anjo Pertiera, Erickson Ramos, Geuel Asia, Mark Deximo, Dave Cabaron, John Kenneth Sarcena, John Carascal, Louie Chavez, JP Bugaoan and Peter Quiel.
The final lineup for the team that will compete in the 29th Southeast Asian Games will be made after the nationwide tour.
Head coach Sammy Acaylar told SPIN.ph he has been impressed with the players during daily workouts, getting a full complement most of the time despite the tough schedule.
“Nakakatuwa pa kasi ‘yung tatlo na taga-Philippine Air Force (Abdilla, Mojica, Fuentes) kailangan ko sila ipaalam sa Air Force so gumagawa ako ng letter but they are also very dedicated,” he added.
But Acaylar noted De Guzman, a former NCAA MVP from College of St. Benilde, has stood out as a leader during training from 6:30 to 10 a.m. at the Arellano gym along Taft Avenue.
“Lahat naman sila magagaling, no doubt about that, everyone in the team has the skills but John Vic kasi he leads by example and that’s what made him stand out,” said the veteran mentor.
“Si John Vic never ‘yan nag-absent, never na-late, tapos siya ang nagli-lead doon sa mga mas bata na players, kinakausap niya lahat, ‘yung maayos ang pakitungo niya sa lahat,” said Acaylar.
