FAR Eastern University crushed Ateneo’s semis hopes in the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference after it disposed also-ran Lyceum University of the Philippines, 18-25, 28-26, 25-15, 25-17 on Monday at The Arena in San Juan.
Toni Rose Basas scored 21 points as the Lady Tamaraws notched their fourth win in five outings.
“Expect ko magdidikit talaga kasi non-bearing na ’to sa Lyceum, no pressure sa kanila pero sa amin turning point namin ito para sa semis,” said FEU coach George Pascua.
FEU advances to the semifinals with a 4-1 win-loss record, joining back-to-back champion National University, the group winner at 5-0. Ateneo (3-2) needed FEU to lose the match to gain a shot at the semis.
The best-of-three semis will start on Wednesday.
Pascua urges the Lady Tamaraws to step up, with skipper Bernadeth Pons and libero Kyla Atienza skipping the PVL semifinals as they see action in the UAAP Season 80 beach volleyball tournament starting on Thursday.
“Sina Kyla and Bernadeth malabo na sa semis kasi may UAAP (beach volley),” he said.
“Sabi ko sa kanila ‘wag nila hanapin si Pons, so challenge sa amin ‘yun. Kailangan mag-step up si Jer (Malabanan), si Chin (Basas) at si Ivana (Agudo).”
Jerrili Malabanan scored nine points for FEU, Ivana Agudo and Jeanette Villareal added eight markers apiece and Heather Guino-o chipped in seven in the one hour and 45-minute match.
Christine Miralles and Rocelyn Hongria combined for 23 points for Lyceum.
