THERE's more to volleyball than emphatic spikes.

That's what veteran Jean Balse-Pabayo proved on Wednesday in Creamline's 18-25, 26-24, 25-17, 25-16 win over Air Force to claim the bronze in the Premier Volleyball League.

For a while inside the court, the former University of Santo Tomas star turned back the hands of time to finish the match with 10 points, five on blocks.

But it was her leadership that spelled the difference as the Cool Smashers bucked a slow start to win the match at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

Creamline assistant coach Oliver Almadro had nothing but praise for the 34-year-old volleyball icon, who took on the leadership role with the team playing without superstar Alyssa Valdez.

"Nahugot na naman si Ging Balse and she really played well. Niloloko ko nga kanina, batang-bata," Almario said shortly after the tussle.

"Para sa akin, yun ang binabayaran kay Ging – it’s not the power, the strength, but the intensity, the leadership."

For her part, Balse was thankful for the trust the team gave her although she has yet to be in top form.

"Sobrang tuwa ko kasi malaki rin tiwala nila kahit di pa ako 100%," she said.

"Marami na experience, alam mo na pano ba-block (kalaban). Tinutuloy-tuloy ko lang. Ginulangan ko na lang, hindi na naman mataas talon ko e," she said with a laugh.
