BINAN, Laguna — Japan and Thailand advanced to the quarterfinals with straight-set wins in pool play on Thursday in the 19th AVC Asian Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championships at Alonte Sports Arena.
Japan bested China, 25-14, 25-17, 26-24, to top Pool B with a 2-0 record.
Koga Sarina, Shinnabe Risa and Nomoto Rika each had 13 points for the Japanese in the one hour and 21-minute match.
Jin Ye scored 10, while Huang Rui Lei and Cai Xiao Qing added nine markers apiece for China.
China is fielding a different team from the squad that won the tournament two years ago led by Rio Olympics MVP Zhu Ting, Zeng Chunlei and Yang Junjing.
Winner of the match between China (1-0) and Australia (1-0) will join Japan in the quarterfinals.
Thailand defeated Iran, 25-18, 25-12, 25-16, for a 2-0 mark in Pool D.
Chatchu-on Moksri tallied 13 points, Hattaya Bamrungsuk scored nine, Wipawee Srithong added eight, while Jarasporn Bundasak and Pimpichaya Kokram each had seven points for Thailand.
Joining Thailand in the quarterfinals is Chinese Taipei, which defeated Maldives, 25-9, 25-8, 25-10, at Muntinlupa Sports Center.
Chinese Taipei won over Iran in the opening match on Wednesday.
Maedeh Borhani Esfahani scored seven for Iran, which dropped to 0-2.
