UNIVERSITY of the Philippines continued its stellar play, stretching its streak to four with a 25-23, 25-22, 25-22 victory over Adamson on Saturday in the UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Maroons tightened their hold of third spot with their sixth win in nine outings.
Coach Gerry Yee’s UP squad also denied Domeng Custodio a victory in his women’s tournament coaching debut and handed the Adamson its sixth loss in nine matches.
The Falcons coach was tapped to handle the women’s side after Sherwin Meneses stepped down as head coach on Thursday.
Rookie Diana Carlos scored 13 points, while skipper Kathy Bersola added 11 for UP, which slipped 15-19 in the third but recovered with a 4-0 run.
With the match tied at 22, UP regained control after back-to-back errors from Adamson spiker Jessica Galanza before the Diliman-based squad put up a triple block on the Lady Falcons stunner to take the win.
“Pangit pero we’ll take the win. Mahirap pala ang maipit dyan sa cloud nine na ’yan, malagkit eh,” said Yee in jest.
“We were warning them the whole week about satisfaction and complacency, so ’yun ang mga kailangan iwasan. I don’t know kung masasabi ’yung mga external factors or talagang sa bata nanggaling. Mahirap getting through that,” Yee added, noting that he felt before the match the Lady Maroons would start slow.
“Yeah, yeah I saw the complacency kasi slow start I was shouting at them na ang bilis na ng pace ng laro kayo ang bagal pa rin ng laro niyo para kayong zombie dyan sa loob ng court so ang hirap i-start them up,” he said.
May Roque scored 11 points for Adamson, while Galanza and skipper Mylene Paat added 10 markers apiece.
