UNIVERSITY of the Philippines boosted its bid for a Final Four spot with a 25-14, 25-27, 25-21, 25-21 victory over National University on Sunday in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.
UP, coming off a win over lowly Adamson, now holds a 7-5 win-loss record to match the Lady Bulldogs.
Ateneo has a 10-2 win-loss record, La Salle holds a 9-2 card, while University of Sto. Tomas has is at 7-4.
Kathy Bersola, Isa Molde and Diana Carlos scored 14 each for UP.
Aiesha Ganaban added 13 points and Marian Buitre scored 12 for the Lady Maroons, who recorded their first back-to-back wins since a 4-0 start to the season.
The Lady Maroons also got back at the Lady Bulldogs, who won their first-round encounter in five sets.
“Hindi 'yung bawi 'yung main focus, 'yung mag-perform sila ng every game since crucial yung last three games. So medyo paulit-ulit pero ‘yun talaga,” said UP assistant coach Rald Ricafort.
“Every game kailangan i-minimize 'yung naging errors namin na nagpatalo sa amin nang sunod-sunod before. So meron naman, pero sana ma-correct ng tuloy-tuloy and medyo naging efficient ang mga attacks kaya ganoon ang kinalabasan,” he added.
UP scored 42 on attacks, while NU came up with 25. The Lady Maroons also had more service aces at 14 against eight in the one hour and 42-minute match.
UP had 16 blocks and NU had 13 total rejections.
NU skipper Jaja Santiago scored 18 points from 10 kills, seven blocks and one service ace, while Aiko Urdas added 12 for the Lady Bulldogs.
Roger Gorayeb skipped the match to attend his son’s high school graduation ceremony.
