IRIS Tolenada of San Francisco State University was made first pick overall by Philips Gold in the Philippine Super Liga rookie draft on Thursday at SM Aura in Taguig.
Angeli Araneta of the University of the Philippines was chosen second by Foton, while Rica Jane Enclona of College of St. Benilde was picked by third by Cignal.
Philips Gold is expected to get a big boost from the 23-year old Filipino-American setter for the All-Filipino Conference set to start in March. The squad, playing as Mane ’N Tail last conference, wound up in the bottom of the standings.
Tolenada, born to Filipino parents in the US, was the female athlete of the year for 2012 and 2013 at San Francisco State and MVP of the California Collegiate Atheletic Association.
“I expect to be able to elevate the game here with my experience,” Tolenada said.
The Lady Maroons ace blocker will be with Ateneo libero Denden Lazaro in the Tornadoes. Lazaro was drafted second in the second round pick.
National University spiker Rizza Mandapat was selected fourth overall by Shopinas, formerly Generika, where she will join Cha Cruz, Paneng Mercado and Micmic Laborte.
Therese Veronas of CSB was drafted fifth by expansion team Shacman, with Alexa Micek of North California State University going to last conference’s champion Petron.
In the second round, NU’s Desiree Dadang was selected by Philips Gold, Cignal chose Diane Ticar of Arellano University, Djanel Cheng was drafted by Shopinas, Samantha Dawson of Far Eastern University was picked by Shacman and Ivy Perez of the Lady Bulldogs will join Micek at Petron.
