IRIGA-Navy made a winning return in the Premier Volleyball League, defeating BaliPure-National University, 25-23, 25-23, 22-25, 25-19, in the Reinforced Conference on Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Uragons, who skipped last year’s tournament, got a big boost from Macy Ubben, who had 27 points from 18 kills, seven of the team’s 11 blocks and two aces, 13 digs and 15 excellent receptions.
Lauren Whyte added 17 markers, all from spikes.
“Ito 'yung gusto naming maging simula. Dati kasi 'yung Iriga kasi, dati talagang underdog talaga. Gusto namin ngayon sa umpisa manalo, para ito na 'yung time para paangat na,” said Iriga-Navy coach Edgardo Rusit.
“Yung import very, malaking tulong sa amin 'yan. Kasi hindi lang sila basta 'yung kasama namin sa team, nagbibigay rin sila ng mga ideas nila eh,” he added giving credits to their imports.
UAAP juniors MVP Mhicaela Belen scored 17 points for the Water Defenders, who are mainly composed of senior high school players from four-time UAAP juniors champion Nazareth School of NU.
American import Alexis Matthews and Season 79 Finals MVP Princess Robles added 15 markers apiece.
Despite facing a young team, Rusit reminded the Lady Uragons to keep their guards up.
“Ang una kong sinabi sa kanila bago magsimula, kailangan basahin muna namin 'yung mga mangyayari, kasi ngayon lang namin sila makakaharap at 'di pa namin kabisado kung ano ang simula nila,” he said.
