Indonesia holds off Vietnam for first ASEAN Grand Prix second leg win

Indonesians bounce back from loss to powerhouse Thailand

STA. ROSA, Laguna — Indonesia edged a tough challenge by Vietnam, 29-27, 25-20, 23-25, 25-17, to earn its first win in the Second Leg of ASEAN Grand Prix on Saturday at the Sta. Rosa Multi-purpose Gym.

Megawati Pertiwi Hangestri and Ratri Wulandari delivered the goods for the Indonesians as they denied the comeback threat of the Vietnamese after a two-hour encounter.

Pertiwi Hangestri put up 21 points off 18 attacks and three blocks. Wulandari had 13 spikes, four aces and a block for 18 points as Indonesia survived despite giving up 30 errors.

Indonesia bounced back from a three-set loss to Thailand during Friday’s opener for an improved 1-1 win-loss record as Arsela Mutiara Lufti fired five aces for 15 points, while Agustin Wulandri and Wilda Siti Nurfadhilah added 11 and 10 markers, respectively.

Thi Kieu Trinh Hoang and Thi hur Luu led Vietnam with 16 and 14 points, respectively, only for them to suffer their second straight loss and stay winless in five games in the Asean Grand Prix since the first leg two weeks ago.

The Indonesians battle Philippines on Sunday at 5 p.m., while the Vietnamese take on Thailand at 3 p.m.
