ATENEO made short work of Adamson, 25-19, 25-23, 25-16, to stay unbeaten five games into its title-retention campaign in the UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday.
Back-to-back MVP Alyssa Valdez poured in a game-high 23 points in a match that took just hour and 14 minutes to finish as the Lady Eagles breezed to their 23rd consecutive win.
Amy Ahomiro and sophomore Maddie Madayag had nine and eight markers, respectively, for Ateneo, which has not dropped a game since the Finals of Season 76 two years ago.
But Valdez is careful not to get ahead of themselves in a quest for a third consecutive title.
“Malayo pa eh, one game at a time even if two games to go for this round, may next round pa tayo that’s the bad news and good news for everyone,” said the 22-year old pride of San Juan, Batangas.
“As much as possible, we want to maintain our consistency, lessen our errors and perform as a team. Mahirap, malayo pa kasi iba iba yung performance ng iba’t ibang team. Di rin natin masasabi kung ano mangyayari sa coming games pa namin,” she added.
Valdez also credited third year setter Jia Morado, who had 16 excellent sets, four times her Adamson counterpart Fenela Emnas’ output.
“Si Jia distributed ‘yung bola, ang ganda ng mga plays (namin) nag-click lang talaga ‘yung first ball namin,” she said. “But really, Adamson hindi sila bumibigay until the very end, lumalaban pa rin naman sila.”
“Pero wala, we’re really just going to learn sa things na nangyari (and) for sure Adamson will learn from it and next round ‘yung experience na nakuha nila madadala nila sa coming round,” added Valdez.
Jessica Galanza and May Roque came with 11 and 10 points for Adamson, which dropped to 1-4.
