LAOAG fought back from a set down to beat Philippine Air Force, 20-25, 26-24, 25-21, 26-24, on Wednesday in the Shakey's V-League Reinforced Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

The Power Smashers bounced back from a five-set loss to Bureau of Customs.

Grethcel Soltones arrived late after making her thesis defense at San Sebastian College, but still wound up as the top scorer for the Power Smashers with 13 points.

Wenneth Eulalio added 10, skipper Chie Saet and Aiko Urdas contributed nine markers apiece, Jessica Galanza and Katherine Villegas scored seven points each and Jorelle Singh had six points in limited action due to illness.

“Sa first set kasi nagka problema kami,” revealed Laoag coach Nes Pamilar.

“Nag-first (six) si Jorelle tapos na-late pa si Grethcel galing kasi (sa school) nag defense pa ng thesis ’yun din naman ang disadvantage ng puro estudyante.”

“So pagdating kay Jorelle sabi niya, ‘coach, medyo mabigat ang pakiramdam ko’ so pinalabas ko muna,” Pamilar said, adding that the NU star had trouble moving her legs.

“Ginawa ko munang pampalit-palit. Maganda naman ang nilaro ni Galanza so kaya nanalo.”

Pamilar arranged a team building activity for Laoag after the heartbreaking loss to Bureau of Customs, and it seemed to work as they improved to 2-1.

“‘Yung talo kasi namin sa Customs, ’yung skills nandoon, ’yung talent nandoon, so ang problema ko kasi talaga  noong umpisa is kung paano sila magco-connect,” said the veteran mentor.

“So sabi ko hindi pwedeng nagkakahiyaan tayo, kasi hindi pa palagay ang loob nila sa isa’t-isa eh kaya right after ng pagkatalo namin sa Customs nag-schedule ako ng maliit na salu-salo,” he added.

“Para magkitakita kami, magkakampante lang sila sa isa’t-isa so medyo gumana naman so ngayon sa game nakikipagbiruan na sila sa isa’t-isa,” he continued.

Jocemer Tapic had 18 points, Joy Cases scored 10 and veteran setter Wendy Semana made 47 of Air Force’s 50 excellent sets.

The Jet Spikers dropped to 1-2 tied with University of the Philippines.
