AFTER a disappointing end to her collegiate career, San Sebastian star Grethcel Soltones put on a brave face, saying she holds no bitterness in her heart.
The spiker from Catmon, Cebu made the finals four times and won three consecutive MVP awards, but she ended up without a championship after the thrice-to-beat Lady Stags were swept by Arellano in the NCAA women's volleyball finals.
Soltones, however, was her usual jolly self while teammates cried around her after a 25-15, 22-25, 25-23, 25-16 loss to the Lady Chiefs completed the downfall of the heavily favored Lady Stags on Tuesday at The PhilSports Arena.
“Wala, wala lang, nag-enjoy lang ako,” said Soltones when asked how she managed to stay in a good mood after the loss. “Ganoon talaga.”
“Hindi ko masabi ngayon 'yung buong nararamdaman ko kasi nga wala akong nakuha sa last year ko. Pero I have to move on from what happened tonight and look forward sa mga next na opportunity na darating,” she added.
Soltones tried to console her teammates during their final huddle of the season, telling them that there’s no use crying over a spilt milk.
For her, a loss is bearable when you know deep inside that you gave a hundred percent effort for the team.
“Kasi bakit ako iiyak? Natalo na nga kami, iiyak pa ako?” she said in response to a reporter's question. “For me, I tried my best, we tried our best, but we didn't make it. Wala naman siguro kaming dapat hingiin pa sa mga sarili namin other than our best.”
Deprived of an NCAA championship, the outspoken volleybelle said she'll try to get the next best thing - a third consecutive title in the women’s beach volleyball tournament.
“Beach volleyball, I'm going to get it,” she said.
