PLDT MyDSL disposed of Systema in straight sets, 25-23, 25-23, 25-22, to become the maiden winner in the inaugural men's division of the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix at The Arena in San Juan on Sunday.
Popular actor and sportsman Richard Gomez led the Speed Boosters with nine points, from eight attacks and one service ace, while Kheeno Franco also had nine in the smashing win.
“Athletic naman siya kaya adaptable siya sa game. Hindi naging kumplikado ang pag-adjust niya sa game,” said PLDT coach Francis Vicente of Gomez.
The Speed Boosters pounced on the Active Smashers' two errors to move to match point, 24-21.
Systema, however, gained a point and derailed the celebration after Gomez hit the ball out to make 22-24.
But former University of Santo Tomas star Henry Pecana scored to seal the win for the Speed Boosters.
“Advantage namin kasi 'yung cohesiveness ng team andoon. Almost two months na kasi kami nag-e-ensayo, lagi sila magkakasama, always present sila, magkakasundo sila at higit sa lahat walang pataasan, pantay lahat,” said Vicente.
“Nagku-kwentuhan sila sa loob ng court, wala sa amin school-based school-based, we are playing for one organization,” he added.
Andre Joseph Pareja came with 10 points for Systema, which gave away 31 points from its total turnovers.
