THE Philippine cast for the FIVB World Club Women's Championship is almost complete as the last player who will join Jovelyn Gonzaga, Rachel Anne Daquis, Kim Fajardo, Jen Reyes, Jaja Santiago and Ces Molina in the All-Star team will be named on Thursday when the Philippine Super Liga heads to La Salle in Lipa, Batangas.
League insiders remained tight-lipped on the identity of the final local player to receive the golden ticket to join the six chosen before her, as well as seven foreign volleybelles to complete the PSL All-Stars who takes on some of the world's best from October 18 to 23 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The only man who knows who it is, PSL president Tats Suzara, is playing it coy.
“Who do you think she is?” Suzara asked reporters. “Ako lang ang may alam, I will announce the seventh player on Thursday.”
Although Suzara has kept mum, hints can be reach from statements of training consultant and Cignal head coach Sammy Acaylar who shared that they plan to get two outside hitters, one opposite, two middle blockers, one setter and one libero from the ranks of the local players.
From the six already chosen, one slot remains as RC Cola Army’s Daquis and Petron’s Molina are both outside hitters; while Lady Trooper Gonzaga is an opposite spiker; Fajardo of F2 Logistics is a setter; and Reyes of the Tri-Activ Spikers is a defense specialist.
Only Foton standout Santiago is the middle blocker, and based on Acaylar's plan, there's room for one more to join Santiago in defending the net.
Last month, 27 hopefuls were named and among them were six middle blockers – Santiago, Mika Reyes of F2 Logistics, Foton’s Maika Ortiz, Cignal’s Jeanette Panaga, Generika’s Geneveve Casugod and Ria Meneses.
The former La Salle stalwart, Reyes, is the fan favorite to nab the last slot based on social media posts. And a league source who refused to be named, also hinted that the ticket will most likely end up with the middle blocker from Pulilan, Bulacan.
“Isipin niyo, may game na noong Linggo ang F2 Logistics pero si Ces Molina pa ang pinangalanan, kasi ‘yung announcement ni Mika eh sa La Salle gagawin,” he said.
The guessing game, though, ends on Thursday and fans can hardly wait to know who will complete the Philippine team set to represent the country on the world stage.
